In January 2019, Allan McVey was appointed to the Department of Administration in the State of West Virginia as the Cabinet Secretary by Governor Justice. He oversees 17 divisions and agencies, including General Services, Fleet Management, Office of Technology, Division of Personnel, Purchasing Division, and many others.

Before his appointment, he had a successful career in the Insurance Industry since becoming a licensed insurance agent and broker. He has served as Medical Claims Examiner with the West Virginia Worker’s Compensation Fund, an underwriter with a national insurance company, and immediately prior to his appointment, West Virginia’s Insurance Commissioner.

Since January 2019, Allan has been active in NASCA. He attended his first in-person event in the fall of 2019 and planned to participate in another in the spring of 2020 until it was canceled. He currently serves on NASCA’s Programs Committee and NASCA’s Research and Policy Committee.

When asked how NASCA has impacted the state, he says, “NASCA has been a valuable resource for our Department and State, especially during these times. It has allowed us networking capabilities with other states to see how they are handling aspects of changes that are occurring very quickly.” He goes on to say, “This has provided us with a very efficient way of handling new items that seem to come up now on a daily basis, and we don’t have to “re-invent the wheel” every time something does change, or we are faced with a new challenge.”

In his spare time, Allan is a sports announcer for several sports teams in the state. However, since March 2020, he has been unable to. He was all set to announce for the St. Albans High School boys’ basketball team that had recently qualified for the state tournament for the first time since 2005, which ended up being canceled the following week. He has hopes to get back into some normalcy at some point and get back to his favorite hobby.
