NASCA Announces 2002 Outstanding Program Award
State Government Agency Honored for Leadership and Innovation
LEXINGTON, KY (September 5, 2002) - The National Association of State Chief Administrators (NASCA) announced today that the Arizona Department of Administration will be honored with 2002 Outstanding Program Award for leadership and innovation. The winning program was selected from an impressive field of nominations from state government organizations.
The 8th annual NASCA (www.nasca.org) Outstanding Program Awards recognize state agencies, organizations or individuals that have demonstrated outstanding leadership skills and innovation, creativity, advanced knowledge and efficiency in state government. This award will be presented during the NASCA Annual Conference, September 28 - October 1 in Scottsdale, AZ.
The winner of this year's Outstanding Program Award is Arizona's Risk Management Loss Prevention Safety Academy. The program's accomplishments include:
- Reduction in Workers' Compensation Cost of Losses for two targeted agencies with large loss histories, DES and ADOT
- Reduction in Occupational Injury and Illness Rate
- Certified over 150 state employees as professional loss prevention coordinators through the Safety Specialists Academy
- Increased education by expanding training curriculum and opportunities to include more state employees and address more loss prevention issues
- Fleet Vehicle Safety Academy trained over 12,000 state employees
- Van Safety-"Van Dynamics" trained over 5,000 state employees
- Train-the-Trainer was implemented for efficiencies in reaching agencies
- Established the Academy on Wheels as an outreach to rural Arizona
- Increased agency communication and customer satisfaction
- Reduced overall costs in loss prevention training by $300,000
The Awards Committee was chaired by Duane Berger, Director, Michigan Department of Management and Budget and included Peta N. Richkus, Secretary, Maryland Department of General Services, Carlton Myrick, Deputy Secretary, Government Operations, Department of Administration, State of North Carolina; Denise Farrell, Deputy Directory, Department of Administration and Information, State of Wyoming, Joyce Murphy, Directory, Division of Purchasing & Materials Management, State of Missouri, and Peter McGeoch of McGeoch Consulting.
